How To Make Sugar Bread

I love the smell of freshly cooked bread. Who doesn't! But making some over a campfire?! Well, it turns out it's not as crazy as I thought...

If you want to expand your culinary campfire skills with something a little different and a lot delicious, this recipe is the perfect opportunity. Sweet Bushcraft Sugar Bread is not only gorgeous when smothered in butter (like everything else under the sun), but it's really easy to make!

What you'll need

Ingredients

*These amounts will feed one person well*

  • 1 cup of plain flour (white or brown)
  • A couple of pinches of salt
  • 2 tbsp. of sugar (brown preferably)
  • A dash of raisins or sultanas
  • 1 tbsp. of cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 tsp. of baking powder

The Campfire Method

Mix

  • Get a fire going well while you mix. For the cooking phase, you'll want your fire to have died down to embers.
  • Set aside 1/5th of the flour, in case you add too much water.
  • Dry mix all the ingredients together well.
  • Keep adding small amounts of cold water and mix.
  • Continue mixing and adding water until the dough sticks together and leaves a clean bowl. If it's too sticky and wet, you can add the extra flour you set aside earlier.

Cook

  • Butter a non-stick pan then add in the dough and spread it out.
  • Ideally, you'll want to cover & leave it to rest for 10 mins. You can skip this step if needed, but the bread will be a bit denser.
  • Place pan on hot embers and ensure it's covered to ensure a better cook. Leave for approx. 8 mins. You may need to check it, so it doesn't burn.
  • Turn the bread over and remove the cover and cook for a further 8 mins.

Eat!

  • Finally, slice it the long way and smother in butter and strawberry jam!

Best enjoyed with a fresh cup of coffee. *Top Tip - To further maximise enjoyment, it helps if someone nearby is suffering through a bowl of soggy cereal with dodgy milk...

For the non-sweet variety just drop the sugar, raisins and cinnamon for a perfect bacon butty bread!
